KITING IS THE PREREQUISITE OF BECOMING A SAFE, CONFIDENT PILOT

At Soar & Sea PPG, we recognize how crucial kiting is to the art of flying. Simply put, if you cannot kite your wing, you cannot fly your wing. We have a saying: “show me a skilled kiter, and I’ll show you a skilled pilot”. This belief is why we are proud to be situated in one of North America's premier locations for developing well-rounded pilots.

During the first 40-60 hours on the stunning beaches of Fernandina Beach, Florida, we dedicate ourselves to building your familiarity with the wing and mastering the essential skill of kiting. Kiting—the practice of controlling your paramotor wing while on the ground—is the cornerstone of powered paragliding. It transforms your wing from a mere piece of nylon into an intuitive extension of yourself.

Let’s explore why kiting is indispensable in your training and how it cultivates that crucial muscle memory.

KITING, YOU CAN NEVER DO TOO MUCH

Why Kiting Is Essential:

Kiting - the act of inflating, controlling, and stabilizing a paraglider wing while standing on the ground - is the foundational safety baseline of paramotoring.

Safety: A significant number of paramotoring incidents occur during takeoffs or landings. Mastering kiting significantly reduces these risks.

Confidence: Gaining control on the ground alleviates anxiety, empowering you to fly without hesitation.

Reading the Wing: Kiting builds muscle memory so you can feel what the wing is doing without constantly staring up at it.

Muscle Memory: Ground handling trains your hands to make tiny, instinctive corrections using the brake toggles.

Active Piloting: Kiting is the absolute best way to learn and master active piloting. Active piloting is the art of using micro-control inputs to keep your wing fully inflated and stable directly overhead, especially when flying through unexpected turbulence.

Smooth Landings: Expert kiters transition their speed precisely, leading to soft, controlled touch downs instead of stumbling or being dragged.

FUN: As if the above reasons were not enough, kiting is ridiculously fun!

Transforming Your Wing Into an Extension of Yourself

Once you achieve true proficiency in kiting, the wing becomes an extension of your body, no longer just an object you control. This deeper connection involves three fundamental senses:

The Seat of Your Pants: Feel the lift and shifts of the wing through your harness.

Line Tension: The pressure you sense in the toggles will inform you instantly if there is an issue, like a collapsing wingtip.

Visual Instinct: Recognizing out-of-bounds wing movements becomes second nature, requiring no intense focus.
